Overview – Documentary Pre-Production – Addictions.

This short documentary will explore the growing culture of art within young aspiring students and creatives. My aim of this documentary is to get an insight to how artists live their life, where they’ve come from, how they’ve gotten to where they are today, what inspires them and most importantly, what they do.

This documentary would cover a number of everyday questions which the general public may be afraid to ask and I aim to inspire the audience, by shooting this documentary I hope to cover FAQ’s by asking questions which will be given to me by the audience themselves. What I will do is, I will notify my classmates what I am doing asking them if there are any questions they would like me to ask, so its coming from my audience rather than just me.

This documentary also touches on a very common situation across Britain within the urban community, as future generations want to carve out their own destiny rather than follow in tradition and family footsteps by choosing a career path, which doesn’t appeal to them.

We also touch on the relationships between the parents of the artists; if they approve of the path there children have chosen to take.

Shooting style:

I’d like the content to be shot in a style known as iconography, in the footage I will record I will like to show what each individual does and record them at work. As each artist will talk directly to camera, the documentary would have a different style to some documentaries, which are standard over the shoulder sit down interviews. I would like to have a head on view of the subject of topic. For example; I like the way how picture number one visually shows

I’d like to tie together elements and tell more of the story and background information in a short space of time (Five Minutes), as these are real stories this will fall under the documentary category.

I’d like to get cutaway shots in Brick Lane, Camden, places which are different to what you’re used to seeing and urban areas.

Other locations would be best to film with a black backdrop, where the interviews will be taking place. Another place will be their place of profession, for example; an actor/actress will be filmed rehearsing in a theatre or in a behind the scenes film.

The Style.

The style of the documentary I would be filming, I’d like my film to be alternative, I would not want my documentary to be your average documentary where the audience will get bored after the first thirty seconds. I’d like to have shots of art and express the artist’s creativity to their full potential. I aim to have a casual background for each interviewee, for example a home setting. Each interviewee will have a range of side shots in creative and urban backgrounds such as Brick Lane (Shoreditch) and Camden. The mood of the shots used would be slow, calm and collective. As each interviewee has a gift, I would like to take my time with each member highlighting his or her abilities.

The Ethics.

The Ethics of my documentary would have a high level of moral conduct, as most documentaries have elements of factual based footage, I’d like to inspire my target audience, which is everyone! I would inspire my audience by exposing their gifts making their abilities known to the audience. Also getting a back story from each person would be beneficial, I think this would be beneficial because everybody has a different path to life and exploring different paths opens mental boundaries.

The Pace.

As we have a five to six minute time limit for our documentary, which in my opinion is quite short there would be quite a lot of information, which would be presented to the audience through using voiceovers and interviews, there will also be footage of artists doing what they do best. I would plan to spend a maximum of two minutes on each person allowing enough time to ask my questions, create transitions between characters in their interviews and while they are performing their art. There will be transitions from the sit-down interview to the artists performing their art.

Structure:

The structure of my short film will be as follows: The Set up and Resolution. I’d like to introduce each character with a synopsis of what they do in an interview and during each interview. My introduction would have each person talking to camera and stating what he or she does. There will be cut away shots of them in a place of calm, rivers, lakes etc.…

Access:

Because I know the people who study at the art university I aim to film near, finding people I don’t think will be a problem. In the 21st century people love to be noticed in pictures and video and notifying the people I will interview that their credits will be shown I feel as though I have the opportunity to make a successful documentary. I would need to get access to lighting, preferably 120-241 volts, as my house doesn’t possess ideal lighting for my interview.

 The Crew Roles:

Because this is an individual project ill be my own crew, I will be directing shots that I would like to use for my documentary, I will be doing sound and finding locations of where to film, I have stated above some of the places I would be filming. I have decided to film at are at my house (living room) to give a warm and relaxed atmosphere; also recording sound would be ideal at home because outer noise would not affect the process of filming my documentary.

What is my documentaries theme?

My documentaries theme would have a creative theme to it, as it relates to what my documentary would include. The theme would have a creative and relaxed environment, by filming half the documentary at home and the other half with the artists in their own creative environment; I aim for the atmosphere to be informal but inspiring. By mixing the two, I plan for this to be successful.

What are my documentaries mood progressions?

I would at first aim to have a slow start to my video by a slow introduction to each person, as the documentary continues by showing clips of alternative art automatically the video’s mood should hopefully progress. I will include a range of voiceovers of each character, as the visuals will show them performing their art on camera.

As you can see in the video above, the mood progresses in many different ways. As a member of the audience, personally I felt inspired by the choice of words used in narration as well as the visuals presented in the film. The mod progresses from a simple story about fishing to the fact she came in to contact with a great white shark and gathered the courage to clutch onto the sharks fin. In this short documentary it has told a story, shown bravery and amongst all has shown a artistic feature.

What type of location should each sequence have?

Hopefully each sequence would have art and individual artists performing to the camera what they do. The interviews will be held at my house and art shots will be held at either UAL (University of the Arts London) or in each persons area of expertise, such as; a stage or on the streets of London. I would want this video to be as natural as possible, I would like to each person in his or her comfort zone. To have a little art appearing in the documentary would be ideal, in the video above there were cut away shots revealing the painting, cleverly enough the painting didn’t get revealed until the documentary was finished revealing a painting of the story being told.

What statement should each location make towards the films premise?

Personally, I feel that I have covered this already; I’d like to show art and artists colliding performing to the audience what they are capable of doing. I would like for this documentary to be as powerful as possible, full of moral conduct and to inspire my audience.

How should each set be lit?

I aim to have a well-lit theme throughout the video but am indecisive to have my documentary in black and white; during editing I will decide which works best. In the interview process at my home I plan to use 120-240v lights, as my lights aren’t good lights to use. Hopefully on the days of shooting the weather would be clear blue skies and sunny to compliment my filming.

What kind of props goes with the set?

Personally, I don’t plan on using props in my documentary. The only props I could see imaginable would be the use of my subjects props, for example; an artist and his/her brush.

What kinds of belongings do the characters keep around them?

I plan on each character keeping with them what they use to be creative, for example; if you’re a painter a paint brush would be appropriate, if you’re a graffiti artist, a spray can would be appropriate and so on.

When would I be ready to film? How long would it take?

It would take me three days to film, one day for each person. Each person would take six hours to film, just to stay on the safe side. As long as each person is organised and meet when arranged there will be no problem.

I would like to begin filming on Monday the 24th of March 2014 and end on Wednesday the 27th. I would be relying on other people during this time so hopefully everything goes to plan due to availability.

It would take me two college days to edit and finish my final piece; I will create a number of final edits and have my work shown in class. The final piece that gets the most likes by my classmates, if I agree I will use that end product. To edit my work I will be using Adobe Premiere, as I have had practical experience editing, I would not require any help.
